Background of the study
Community leaders hold influential positions in shaping public opinion and mobilizing collective action, particularly in combating malnutrition. In Ifo Local Government, traditional and modern community leaders have been pivotal in initiating programs aimed at addressing food insecurity and promoting nutritional education (Olatunde, 2023). Their roles extend beyond governance to include advocacy for sustainable agricultural practices, community gardens, and nutritional awareness campaigns (Ademola, 2024). However, challenges such as limited resources, cultural barriers, and external economic pressures have hindered their efforts. This study investigates how community leadership affects malnutrition prevention, exploring strategies used to mobilize communities, raise awareness, and integrate traditional values with modern nutrition interventions (Balogun, 2025). The findings are expected to contribute to improved policy frameworks that leverage community leadership for effective nutritional outcomes.

Statement of the problem
Despite the critical role of community leaders in mitigating malnutrition in Ifo Local Government, challenges persist due to inadequate resources, conflicting cultural beliefs, and limited governmental support. The lack of a coordinated strategy has resulted in sporadic successes and recurring nutritional deficits (Olatunde, 2023; Balogun, 2025). These shortcomings underscore the need to evaluate the effectiveness of community leadership in combating malnutrition, in order to develop sustainable interventions that integrate both traditional and modern practices.

Objectives of the study:

  1. To assess the role of community leaders in malnutrition prevention.
  2. To evaluate the impact of leadership initiatives on nutritional outcomes.
  3. To recommend strategies for enhancing community-led nutrition programs.

Research questions:

  1. How do community leaders influence malnutrition prevention efforts?
  2. What initiatives have been most effective in addressing malnutrition?
  3. How can community leadership be strengthened to combat nutritional deficits?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Community leadership significantly impacts nutritional outcomes.
  2. Effective leadership initiatives reduce malnutrition rates.
  3. Strengthening community engagement improves program sustainability.

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it highlights the indispensable role of community leaders in the fight against malnutrition. The findings will provide valuable insights for policymakers and local organizations to enhance leadership strategies and promote sustainable nutritional health in Ifo Local Government (Ademola, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to examining the influence of community leaders on malnutrition prevention within Ifo Local Government, focusing exclusively on local leadership and nutrition initiatives.

Definitions of terms:

  • Malnutrition: A condition resulting from an imbalanced or insufficient diet.
  • Community Leadership: The influence exerted by local leaders in mobilizing collective action.
  • Nutritional Outcomes: The measurable effects of dietary practices on health.
